There was once a piece of fabric which captivated the hearts of the Spanish. This fabric was highly coveted for its intricate embroidery of flowers or animals, and fringe ends. But this fabric, called the Manton de Manila, is in fact a silk shawl which came from China.

Home is traditionally perceived as the inviolable place of the family, evoking all the notions of warmth, security and belongingness. The house outside the city most especially aspires to a picture of contemplative bliss: the slanting roof, the sprawling lawn, the white picket fence.

Author Steven Brower will be signing copies of his new book, “Satchmo: The Wonderful World and Art of Louis Armstrong,” while his wife Kati Brower of the band Nine Below Zero will be performing Armstrong’s songs with some of her friends.
